The first Nepal Trade Fair, 2001
A month long Bangladesh Nepal Joint Trade fair was held in Panchagarh at Sirajul Islam stadium on February, 2001. On enhancing bilateral economic cooperation following the two country’s latest thrust. The commodity bazaar accommodated 100 stalls of Bangladesh & 50 of Nepal showcasing goods & services of agriculture, industry, education, health & culture.
Commerce Minister Abdul Jalil inaugurated the fair on 10 February, 2001.
The fair was organized by Panchagarh Chamber and Michi Chamber of Nepal in association with the Bangladesh Commerce Ministry. The two chambers signed memorandum of understanding when Panchagarh chamber president toured Nepal in 2000 as an FBCCI delegation member as his frontier district is the transit point. Representatives of both chambers urged the government to allow duty-free entry of Nepalese goods to the fair through Banglabandha land customs on the transit route.
Also Nepal-Bangladesh trade fair gained momentum as commerce ministers of five Southeast Asian countries grouped in an economic bloc, BIMSTEC, began a meeting in Yangon yesterday to strengthen trade and economic cooperation among the member countries. The third such meeting of BIMSEC (Bangladesh, India, Myanmar, Srilanka and Thailand-Economic Cooperation) was opened by Myanmar’s State Peace and Development Council (SPDC) Secretary and BIMSTEC steering committee chairman Khin Nyunt. Bangladesh Commerce Minister Abdul Jalil who is leading a five-member delegation told the meeting that BIMSTEC should be turned into a strong platform to voice the issues of common concern of the member countries and suggest measures to world bodies, particularly WTO. He emphasized the need for implementation of the proposals adopted in last two meetings to survive in the competitive world trade, according to a message received here.
